A youth baseball game at Wingate University was disrupted Friday evening when a man, who police say injured himself with his own gun, prompted a lockdown of the campus. The incident occurred around 7 p.m., according to an alert from the school's system shared by WCNC. Officials placed the individual in custody and confirmed that no members of the campus community were involved.

Details from QC News reveal the man had been driving erratically on Wilson Street before his truck ended up in a ditch. Reportedly, several shots were fired inside the truck cab, leading to self-inflicted injuries. The man then exited his truck, scaled a fence, and was observed "running around the baseball field". Officers arrived at the scene to find this erratic behavior unfolding. The university sent out a subsequent alert stating, "There is no longer a threat to campus." Nevertheless, they advised the community to steer clear from the baseball field while law enforcement continued their investigation.

While the lockdown caused significant alarm, a Wingate University spokesperson assured that "The shooter is not affiliated with Wingate University, and no Wingate University employees or students were injured or involved in the incident," as reported by WBTV. This statement helped to alleviate concerns about a possible connection between the shooter and the university itself. The lockdown was lifted once the situation was fully contained and the area was secured by law enforcement.
