Mecklenburg County Public Health has garnered a nod for their dedication to equity, earning an accolade from WFAE, the NPR station serving the Charlotte area, through the inaugural EQUALibrium Awards. These awards spotlight individuals and institutions for making a significant impact on race and equity in the community. According to a recent announcement, the county's public health department is among those being celebrated.

"We are very honored to receive this recognition by WFAE," remarked Dr. Raynard Washington, Mecklenburg County Public Health director. He underscored the essential role of public media in connecting residents to vital information and resources. "Our mission of promoting and protecting the public’s health can only be achieved if we meet our residents where they are," he explained. Recognition extends beyond mere provision of services; it involves a commitment to understanding and addressing the access-related conditions facing residents.

This year’s EQUALibrium Awards will bestow honors upon more than just organizations. Among the individuals to receive recognition are Jane and Hugh McColl, who have been chosen for the Luminary Award due to their sustained dedication to creating educational equity and opportunities for young people in the community.

Public Health is just one of the three government entities to be recognized, with over 100 nominations across seven categories. The winners and nominees will come together on June 27 to celebrate the strides made in equity at an awards ceremony. Such events are crucial in acknowledging the ongoing efforts of those striving towards a more equitable society.
