A somber search transformed into a grim recovery operation Saturday at Arkansas Bend Park, as divers and first responders sought an adult swimmer who vanished beneath the waters of Lake Travis, per officials. As reported by KXAN, the swimmer had been utilizing an electric underwater scooter before they disappeared; the incident was first called in shortly after 2:30 p.m.
Austin-Travis County EMS took to social media describing the transition from a rescue to a recovery effort, indicating the gravity of the situation after the individual failed to resurface, and multiple first responder boats arriving on the scene attempted to rescue, yet as the afternoon waned, the search shifted toward recovery, this detail as evidenced by a spokesperson for the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, who communicated the search would persist until sundown and, if necessary, resume at sunrise.

In a concurrent report by KVUE, eyewitnesses reported the disappearance occurring around 2:40 p.m., with the 911 call coming from someone aboard a boat witnessing the distressing event. ATCEMS crews had been combing the area using sonar equipment to locate the swimmer who is yet to be found.
Authorities have not released the identity of the missing person as the lake's placid surface disguises a deeper turmoil underneath.
