The Hundreds Co-Founder Ben Shenassafar Unveils The Benjamin Hollywood, a New Restaurant and Bar on Melrose AvenueSource: Eater Los Angeles

Ben Shenassafar, best known for co-founding the streetwear label the Hundreds, is stepping into new territory with the launch of his first restaurant, the Benjamin Hollywood, located on Melrose Avenue. With its doors set to open on June 25, this venture marks a significant pivot for Shenassafar, who, despite his longstanding connections with the food industry, had never envisioned himself as a restaurateur. In a statement obtained by Eater Los Angeles, Shenassafar acknowledges the daunting nature of the business, saying, "I see how hard it is and how much work they put into it."

Teaming up with bar proprietor Jared Meisler, known for establishments such as the Moon Room and Bar Lubitsch, the two embarked on a quest for the perfect location, ultimately being captivated by the charm of a 1920s Art Deco building in Los Angeles. After looking at potential spaces, Shenassafar, and Meisler were struck by the building's exterior, a decision solidified the following morning upon seeing the interior, according to Eater Los Angeles.

The restaurant's aesthetic pays homage to its architectural roots, featuring dark wood-paneled walls, frosted glass Art Deco chandeliers, and an oak bar that lives in the centerpiece of the room, enveloped by olive green mohair booths. Contrary to his initial reluctance, Shenassafar eventually settled on the name the Benjamin for his dining venture. When the vision for the menu came up, he turned to chef Johnny Cirelle, previously of Spago and Bestia, drawing inspiration from personal dining experiences in restaurant bars around the world for a selection that includes dishes like steak frites and chocolate chip cookies at Shenassafar's new establishment with a bar serving as the best seats in the house.

The beverage program at the Benjamin is masterminded by Meisler, business partner Kate Burr, and acclaimed bartender Nathan Oliver. They have curated a list of cocktails, such as Ben’s Martini, and the Be Bright Martini featuring Japanese whiskey, along with a sophisticated wine and beer selection overseen by sommelier Sam Rethmeier. Shenassafar, bringing a touch of his streetwear expertise, has outfitted the staff in custom-designed apparel by the Hundreds, hinting at more restaurant merchandise in the future. Shenassafar told Eater Los Angeles, "My dream is for everyone that comes there to walk out and go up to the host and say, 'Hey, can I make a reservation for next week?'"

Open from Tuesday to Saturday, starting at 5:30 P.M., the Benjamin Hollywood is located at 7174 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90046. Sitting down for a late-night bite festooned with Hollywood's old glamour or simply indulging in an icy martini at the bar, Shenassafar's restaurant invites locals to experience a slice of luxe dining. Reservations can be made through Resy, ensuring patrons have their spot secured in this latest hot spot on LA's culinary map.
