In Wayne County, a 76-year-old insurance agency operator is gearing up to face serious charges. Nancy Caviston, from Superior Charter Township, will stand trial for alleged embezzlement, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced. The charges include two counts of embezzlement by an agent, each carrying a possible five-year sentence, as well as two misdemeanor counts of wage and fringe benefits violations, reported by ClickOnDetroit.

Caviston, who ran The Caviston Agency, Inc. located in Plymouth, is accused of misappropriating payroll deductions from two longtime employees. These deductions were intended for IRA contribution withholdings but were allegedly used for personal and business expenses. In addition, she's accused of not making the employer-matching contributions required for those IRA accounts. Her next court appearance is scheduled for July 12, before the 3rd Circuit Court in Wayne County.

The investigation into Caviston's actions was conducted by the federal Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration. Highlighting the insidious nature of such crimes, Attorney General Nessel stated, "Payroll and benefit fraud often lurk undetected for years". She further praised the effort of the Department of Labor and prosecutors, saying, "Unsuspecting and hardworking employees should be able to trust their employers without worry of being victimized by them", as per the Michigan Department of Attorney General.

According to the earlier proceedings, Caviston was granted a $5,000 personal recognizance bond back in January. The preliminary examination highlighted the stakes for the aggrieved parties, whose retirement resources were undercut. The case now proceeds to the 3rd Circuit Court where financial and ethical accountability will be at the forefront of the proceedings.
