Your Upper Haight Pre-Summer Storefront ShufflePhoto: Camden Avery/Hoodline

Haight Street retail locations can go through a lot of changes as the seasonal influx of tourists start to arrive in May. Shops scramble to open, or move a couple of blocks to a more stable lease. In our review of the annual chaos below, you can see a lot of shuffling going on, plus some spaces with longer-term trends.

First, Hyperoptics is open for business in the new storefront it acquired at 1728 Haight back in February, which means one less vacancy on the Cole-to-Shrader block. But it leaves the former storefront, 1463 Haight, between Masonic and Ashbury, shuttered for the moment.

Also on the 1700 block, the Buyer's Best Friend storefront has been closed for just over a month now, with no signs of occupation in sight, and Pink Lily's space at 1748 Haight is on the market for $6,500 per month.

618 Shrader, formerly Giant Robot, remains closed after about 4 years, with no word on a new prospect. But the neighboring 636 Shrader, formerly the blue-and-gold behemoth of an office for the Rosebud Agency, is now occupied by humangear.

Work is still underway at the corner of Haight and Cole, in the former Homeless Youth Alliance's headquarters, but with no word of what might be moving in after the retrofit and facelift are completed.

The VeganBurg shop slated to open on the remains of All You Knead is, at the last appraisal, expected to open some time this summer, and although hiring has commenced, the shop looks much the same from the street.

Further up the street, People's Cafe at 1419 Haight remains closed for renovations with an estimated completion date late this month or early in July.

And the soon-to-be easternmost outpost of the Upper Haight's retail dominion, Ritual Coffee at 1300 Haight, is still under construction, with a vaguely projected opening date some time in July.

That's all for now, but as usual, hold onto your hats and expect further changes over the next couple of months. We'll keep you posted.
