Page Street's Mosaic Murals Still Seeking Home, May Be DestroyedPhotos: Susan Strolis

The tile mosaic murals that once adorned the side of the former Boys and Girls Club at Page and Stanyan, which is now Fei Tian Academy, are still without a forever home.

Earlier this year, we reported that the murals, created by artist Sharon Virtue in 2007 and 2008, had been taken down, and would be stored somewhere with SF Public Works. But due to concerns over the murals' fragility, Public Works didn't want to move them twice.

Instead, as tipster (and Friend of Alvord Lake) Susan Strolis let us know via email, the murals are actually sitting in Fei Tian's fire exit hallway, waiting for takers to relocate them.

There are six murals in total, each about 5’H x 12’W, weighing about 800lbs, and permanently mounted onto 1” thick stucco cement (metal wire reinforced and nailed to wood studs).

The murals, which were constructed by Virtue in collaboration with volunteers and youth at the Boys and Girls Club, are free to any public space, because they were paid for with a grant from the San Francisco Arts Commission. That means they'll cost their new hosts only what it takes to install them.

Strolis says the school was hoping to rehome all six murals together, but that may not be possible. "It would be great to keep them together as a group, but at this point, they might be picked singularly," she said in an email.

The Fire Department has given the school until July 22nd to clear the murals from their fire exit hallway, at which point they may be destroyed.
