New York-based pizza chain Artichoke Basille’s is now open in the former Lanesplitter Pizza location. It's the second location in California for the company, whose Berkeley outpost opened in 2013.

Owner Jim Trevor, a Northern California native, told Hoodline last year that he wanted to bring some East Coast flavor to the area. “There’s a lot of growth happening in the Oakland food scene," he said. "New and exciting concepts are popping up constantly, and we want Artichoke to be part of the movement."

Artichoke’s is best known for its oversized slices, especially the spinach-and-cream-topped artichoke pie. Other options include pepperoni, margherita, a Sicilian slice with vodka sauce, and a "crab" pie topped with surimi.

A few blocks away at Telegraph and 40th, pan-Asian eatery Saucy is still planning to open next month in the former Pita Pocket space, according to veteran Hoodline tipster Al M.

Diners can expect "fun, modern, pan-Asian flavors" in dishes like braised beef ribs with Parmesan cauliflower puree and steamed pork belly bao, as well as premium sake, house sauces, and sake cocktails.

According to Berkeleyside, Saucy owners Jenni Nguyen and Tony Pham Ngo founded the company in 2015, building their client base through catering and pop-ups before settling on this brick-and-mortar location.

The former Bar 41/Cafe Underwood space has also found a new tenant. Café Encina, named for a type of coastal Spanish oak tree, will open next month under co-owners Julia and Terry Sok-Wolfson (Aburaya Japanese Fried Chicken) and Seanathan Chow (Oakland Bloom).

The new eatery will offer Portuguese- and Spanish-inspired snacks like gambas al ajillo, charcuterie boards and olives. Expect coffee by day, and wine and cocktails by night, with an emphasis on vegan and gluten-free options.

On Instagram, the owners describe themselves as "a group of buds committed to bringing you a friendly work and hangout environment ... [with] great coffee, snacks and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic)."

According to the restaurant's Planning Department permit, it will boast full sit-down table service and waitstaff.
