Cafe Gertrude debuts on NE AlbertaPhoto: Courtney S./Yelp

A new casual eatery, offering sandwiches, salads and more, has opened its doors in the Alberta Arts District. The fresh addition, called Cafe Gertrude, is located at 3023 N.E. Alberta St. in the space formerly occupied by Vita Cafe.

Cafe Gertrude serves up a wide variety of vegan-friendly fare, with dairy and meat available upon request. On the menu, look for corn cakes, scrambles and entrees, such as the seitan cheesesteak on a baguette, a buffalo tofu wrap and nachos smothered with beans, brown rice, black olives, salsa, guacamole, sour cream and vegan cheese sauce.

The cozy spot is named for owner Johnny Sullivan's dog, Gertrude, according to the restaurant's website

With a 4.5-star rating out of three reviews on Yelp so far, Cafe Gertrude is on its way to developing a local fan base.

Courtney S., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on Jan. 25, wrote, "The food was incredible and the customer service was great."

Cafe Gertrude is now open at 3023 N.E. Alberta St., so swing on by to take a peek.
