Long Beach Public Library Launches "Our History, Our Future" Celebration Honoring Black History and CultureSource: City of Long Beach

The Long Beach Public Library is stepping up its game with a month-long celebration called "Our History, Our Future," putting black history and culture center stage. From professional development to musical performances, they've got a lineup that's all about honoring the African American community and their contributions. The library's kicking things off on February 3rd with a "Black Excellence Professional Development Day" to start a month of reflection and celebration.

Mayor Rex Richardson is throwing his support behind the event, saying, "I am honored to stand alongside the Long Beach Public Library once again for the inspiring 'Our History, Our Future' celebration, a series of events that exemplifies the strength, creativity, and unity within our Black community.” He was all about the importance of community and togetherness in a statement he gave.

As part of the festivities, the library's planning on playing live music, African drumming, and even some storytime sessions for the kids, featuring guest author C.M. Harris. But the showstopper's the Black Voices Open Mic on February 24 where anyone can step up to the mic and share their art, be it poetry or personal tales, with a crowd ready to listen and celebrate black culture.

Cathy De Leon, Director of Library Services, is fired up about the line-up, saying, "We are thrilled to present 'Our History, Our Future,' a celebration that aims to bring our community together to honor and appreciate the profound contributions of Black individuals throughout history." Firmly she believes in the power of these events to connect people and show off the diversity and creativity that's alive and kicking in the African American community.

The library sent out an open invitation for the event. Find out more about the events on their website.
