Austin-based House of Shan Fuses Style with Philanthropy, Raises $85,000 for CharitiesSource: Instagram/houseofshan

The burgeoning trend of businesses that blend commerce with a mission continues to gain momentum, and House of Shan is at the forefront, carving a niche in the lifestyle apparel domain. Shannon Buth's Austin-based company, launched in 2020, has embraced a philanthropic model that's capturing the hearts—and wallets—of charitable consumers. Selling a wide range of goods adorned with their signature, imperfect heart logo, Buth's brand doesn’t just push products; they are selling sweatshirts, tanks, and trucker hats with a side of altruism.

At its core, House of Shan is linking its retail success to charity work, donating $5 from each sale to different women's and children's nonprofits every month. By connecting with customers over shared passions and embedding philanthropy into its business model, Buth and her company are creating more than just a brand—they are fostering a community. According to Tribeza, Buth's inspiration stemmed from a simple yet profound message on a bracelet given to her by a friend: “Live what you love.” As she told Tribeza, the phrase “just resonated with me.”

Once a mother in search of community, Buth's journey took on entrepreneurial wings when she launched a blog to connect with other moms and discuss grief after her mother was diagnosed with cancer. That journey has led to partnerships like the one House of Shan forged with the Children’s Heart Foundation, which, during February, benefits from a portion of the business's sales. Marketing and communications director Lauren DeVoe conveyed to the Austin American Statesman, how vital such partnerships are: “That’s always a great thing that we don’t take lightly because awareness is a huge part of what we do outside of just raising dollars.” House of Shan has accrued over $7,500 in donations for the Children’s Heart Foundation since 2021.

As the House of Shan prepares for future community events, including a special Mother’s Day occasion, Buth maintains that the essence of her business is rooted in remembrance and honor for her late mother. "I always say this is a love letter to her and her life," Buth said, as per Austin American Statesman. From a hopeful blog to a celebrated lifestyle brand, House of Shan continues to champion community bonds and the philosophy of living with passion—just as Buth's mother inspired.
