The Memphis Zoo is in mourning following the death of one of its star attractions, a giraffe named Angela Kate. The renowned female giraffe passed away after a tragic accident in her exhibit area in the early hours of March 5. The zoo announced her death stating, "It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Angela Kate, one of the most popular and beloved female giraffes at the Memphis Zoo," in an emotion-laden Facebook post, as reported by FOX13 Memphis.

Angela Kate, who had fallen and seriously injured herself, saw no hope for recovery after the incident, the zoo had to make the tough decision to euthanize their beloved giraffe to prevent any further suffering her injuries were simply too severe leaving no chance of recovery, "The severity of her injuries left no possibility for recovery, and the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize her," a statement said, as detailed by People. In the interim, zoo officials have removed the other giraffes from the exhibit and are carrying out extensive regrading and resurfacing work to prevent similar incidents.

As a longtime resident of the zoo, the giraffe had a meaningful impact, she was born there in 2006 and named for the daughters of two staff members who had reared her and in homage to the zoo's millionth visitor that year, Angela Kate also leaves behind a notable legacy as a mother, having given birth to four calves; Ja Raffe, Panya, Ali, and Lily, with only Ali still residing at the Memphis Zoo, her influence can be seen in the way her playfulness and habits were mimicked by the other giraffes in her group.

The loss of Angela Kate has been felt deeply by both staff and visitors, "Angela Kate held a special place in the hearts of both staff and visitors alike she was the first and most constant presence at giraffe chats and the giraffe deck, Angela Kate was well known for not missing a free treat or a snack," the Memphis Zoo expressed sentiments of grief and loss according to a statement obtained by Live5News. The circumstances around her fall remain unclear, but the zoo is actively working to enhance safety measures for the remaining giraffes.
