The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services is turning a spotlight on the needs of aging individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism, releasing a new issue of the Positive Approaches Journal, packed with the latest research and resources to support these populations. DHS Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh said, “DHS works to ensure that Pennsylvanians with intellectual disabilities and autism have the services and supports they need at every stage of life, especially as they age,” noting the importance of improving daily life for citizens of all ages.

As part of his commitment to the well-being of Pennsylvanians, Governor Shapiro has rolled out a proposed budget that's all about providing individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism the right services, at the right time, while shoring up care for families and neighbors; the budget includes funding for implementing his aging strategy, the Aging Our Way, PA Plan.

Research featured in the Positive Approaches Journal addresses a variety of pressing concerns such as ageism and ableism in healthcare and the importance of tailoring services to individual preferences for community participation. One highlighted article discusses the challenges of social isolation among older Pennsylvanians and the available support to strengthen community ties.

The lack of historical research on individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities as they age has led to underserved needs and a call to action to support aging well and living meaningful lives notably, this push is reinforced by the ten-year strategic plan showcased in the journal called Aging Our Way, PA: Paths to Independence. Moreover, with a special look at Medicare coverage, the journal elucidates how it assists with mental health and substance use disorder treatments and services underscoring the essential safety net it provides.
