A Texan businessman, once esteemed in the McAllen community, has been sentenced to over 16 years behind bars for exploiting a minor to produce child pornography, a federal court ruling reveals. Luis Fabian Vela, 62, who entered a guilty plea last October, faced the music when U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez tightened the screws with a 195-month prison term, according to a Department of Justice release.
The severity of Vela's sentence comes from being pegged as a repeat and dangerous offender against minors, his victim being under the age of 16, and during the sentencing, Judge Alvarez didn’t mince words when she labeled Vela’s behavior as sexually deviant highlighting how his acts, shrouded in darkness, posed a danger to the community. After serving his sentence, Vela faces 10 years of supervised release, which will hem him in with numerous restrictions designed to cut off his access to kids and the internet, he will also wear the indelible mark of a registered sex offender.
"Vela is a prominent business owner who used his significant means to coerce minors into producing pornographic material of children for his own gratification, even going as far as instructing them how to take photographs of specific areas," U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani described the sordid affair, as obtained by the Department of Justice release.
Last fall, the depravity unfolded when Vela, leveraging his business account associated with Birdiebistro, began his downward spiral into criminality, paying off a 15-year-old after vulgar conversations even after being clearly told of their age, but in the cold gaze of Justice, Vela's wealth and bravado have now crumbled, leaving him nothing but time to reflect on his grave misdeeds behind bars. Vela is currently held pending his transfer to a federal penitentiary, the specifics of the venue are yet to be unveiled by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, per the report.
