A high-speed pursuit turned fatal on the roads of Texas when an attempted traffic stop escalated to a deadly confrontation, leading to the death of a San Antonio man. The Texas State Highway Patrol identified the man as 37-year-old Luis Miquel Navarro, who was fatally shot by law enforcement on FM-78, according to details released by the agency.
The incident unfolded around 1 p.m. Monday, when a Department of Public Safety Officer tried to stop a black Dodge Caravan for a unspecified traffic infraction. Navarro, behind the wheel, reportedly floored it to speeds exceeding 110 MPH instead of complying, instigating a dangerous chase along the highway. The pursuit reached its volatile conclusion when Navarro's vehicle collided into a white Chevy Tahoe, leaving passengers from both vehicles hospitalized with injuries that were non-life-threatening, as stated in a report by FOX San Antonio.
The sequence of events that led to Navarro's death began with the crash and continued with a tense confrontation with law enforcement. Despite the accident, Navarro allegedly kept defying police orders, even after officers used Tasers in an attempt to subdue him. After multiple failed tasing attempts, officers fired a single round into Navarro’s chest. He succumbed to these injuries later after being transported to Brooke Army Medical Center.
The duty to scrutinize this incident falls upon the Texas Highway Patrol, Texas DPS, and the Texas Rangers, who are actively conducting thorough investigations into the specifics of the shooting and chase.
