Whitehaven High School in Memphis has started the construction of an ambitious new addition to its campus, a $9 million STEM facility named the Herbert STEM Center. The groundbreaking ceremony, held yesterday, gathered educators and collaborators who witnessed the commencement of the project which promises to lay a modern foundation for education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Named after 1958 Whitehaven High graduate James Herbet, the funding largely comes from his contributions. The new center will sprawl across up to 20,000 square feet, offering not just classrooms but focusing on extensive laboratory space.
