The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) released the names of six Wright County sheriff's deputies, excluding one undercover operative, involved in a use-of-force incident earlier this month where 38-year-old Matthew Lyrek was critically wounded, the agency reported following the confrontation at a Dollar General store in Montrose.

Officials reported that the deputies were executing multiple felony arrest warrants against Lyrek, who is currently in stable condition at a hospital, when the altercation occurred, leading Deputy Andrew Lundeen to discharge his rifle and two others to employ Taser devices, what ensued was a chaotic deployment of less-than-lethal force by other officers present before Lyrek was successfully subdued and hospitalized.

The BCA's reveal of the deputies' identities includes Deputy Matthew Bilitz and Sgt. Jeff McMackins who both enlisted their less-than-lethal options, alongside Deputy Heath Gilliham and Deputy William Kenyon who resorted to their Tasers, the confrontation became intense when Lundeen drew and fired his rifle during the arrest attempt.

Despite the lack of body camera evidence, as Wright County sheriff's vehicles are not yet equipped with such technology, squad car cameras did manage to document parts of the conflict, this partial evidence alongside gathered cartridge casings, firearms from Lyrek's vehicle, and two handguns he was alleged to have had on him at the time of the arrest are all being examined as part of the ongoing investigation from the BCA.

In adherence to standard procedure, the Wright County Sheriff's Office requested the BCA to take over the investigation, and upon its completion, the BCA will forward its findings to the Wright County Attorney's Office, leaving the crucial decision of potential charging, conspicuously without a recommendation, in the hands of the local legal apparatus.
