Roadwork Alert: US 60 Lane Closures in Morristown-Surprise Area to Cause Traffic DelaysSource: Arizona Department of Transportation

Drivers in the Grand Avenue stretch between Morristown and Surprise should brace for delays. The Arizona Department of Transportation is putting the brakes on traffic for roadwork that's sure to test the patience of many. From May 3-5 and again May 10-12, US 60 will be down to one lane on each side in certain sections, according to a news release.

For those trying to navigate the morass, the first bout of restrictions kicks off at 11 p.m. on May 3, with lanes reopening intermittently until 3 p.m. May 5. During these times, navigating Grand Avenue will be like threading a needle—the lanes slimmed down to one on both sides between 163rd Avenue and Center Street. Deer Valley Road at US 60 will be out of commission, so drivers should mark their maps for Happy Valley Road or 163rd Avenue as alternates.

The second round of snarls starts May 10 at 11 p.m. and is expected to cling to the schedule until 3 p.m. May 12. One lane open in each direction will be the order of the day from Center Street to SR 74. Considering the limited space and reduced speed limit of 45 mph set for safety, foresight and planning ahead will be indispensable for those who usually take this route.

The width restriction in the area throughout construction will be 11 feet, gripping the road for both phases of the work. Oversized eastbound vehicles have the detour option via State Route 74 to Loop 303. Westbound vehicles will have to navigate north to Loop 303 and then traverse Lake Pleasant Parkway to SR 74. Local traffic might save time using Happy Valley Road to circumvent the work zone altogether.

For the most up-to-date traffic information and to keep their sanity in check, drivers are encouraged to consult the City of Surprise website. Meanwhile, ADOT urges all motorists to cool their jets, slow down, and heed construction signs to ensure the safety of both the workers and themselves.
