A District woman faced the music as she was sentenced to 14 months behind bars after a botched shoplifting attempt turned violent, officials said. Jamilla Haskins, 33, of Washington, D.C., didn’t go quietly when she was caught trying to swipe a slew of items — her reprieve was cut short by pepper spray and a pocketknife, according to U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and MPD Chief Pamela Smith.

Caught red-handed, Haskins attempted to make a dash from a CVS on January 23 with 30 items, including hair clips, shaving cream, and body oil, stuffed in her bag. An on-duty MPD detective, on lookout for retail theft at the local stores, nabbed her as she bypassed the registers. Haskins’ counterattack came quick with a blast of pepper spray to the detective's face, officials detailed.

The altercation didn’t end there. The detective grappled with the defendant, trying to detain her while partially blinded inside the store. The tussle spilled outside, where Haskins pulled a black pocketknife and threatened the lawman. According to the Department of Justice, the detective, despite the sting of the spray, disarmed her. But Haskins wasn't finished — she made an break for it, only to be corralled shortly after by the detective and backup officers down the block.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Rashmika Nedungadi spearheaded the prosecution of the case, which concluded with Haskins pleading guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon on February 21. Haskins’ sentence includes a period of supervised release after her incarceration. It’s a stark reminder of the price to be paid for taking the law into one's own hands—14 months to ponder a failed heist and its consequences.
