Arrests and Campus Officer Hospitalized Amid Escalating Palestine Solidarity Protests at Portland State UniversitySource: Google Street View

Protests at Portland State University took a dramatic turn, with several individuals arrested and one campus officer hospitalized yesterday. According to KGW, the demonstrations began peacefully at the school's Urban Plaza around 4 p.m. but escalated when a group arrived at the Richard and Maurine Neuberger Center, leading to some protesters chaining themselves to the building. Portland Police Bureau officers, assisting campus security, were the ones who made the situation turn more arrests.

The event marked the second consecutive day of agitation on the PSU campus, with demonstrations evidently rooted in solidarity with Palestine. The university confirmed that the previous day also saw protesters attaching themselves to the entrance of the Neuberger Center building, as reported by KATU. More arrests were made in the lower garage of the building, where additional protesters were located by the authorities.

A campus security officer was taken to the hospital following the clashes, although the extent of their injuries was not immediately disclosed. "Assisted PSU Campus Public Safety," a PPB spokesperson confirmed to KOIN in a statement that Portland officers "assisted in making some arrests" as well. Detailed information about the officer's condition or the individual's arrests were deferred to PSU officials.

These protests follow an earlier May incident where an occupation at PSU's Millar Library amid Gaza ceasefire demonstrations resulted in significant property damage, with repair costs estimated at over $750,000. Flyers promoting Thursday's rally were shared online, calling for a peaceful assembly at Urban Plaza "in the name of love for Palestine," a motive suggested in the KOIN report. Despite the previous civil beginnings of the demonstration, the library, crucial for student resources, has been rendered unavailable for use until the fall, due to the extensive damage sustained.
