Coppell Police Officer Achieves Elite Drug Recognition Expert Certification Amid Texas DUI BattlesSource: Coppell Police Department

The Coppell Police Department is celebrating one of its own after Officer Dustin Mayfield-Walter completed an extensive program to become a certified Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). The DRE certification empowers law enforcement officers to better identify drivers under the influence of drugs beyond alcohol.

According to the Coppell Police Department, Officer Mayfield-Walter is now among about 300 active DREs in Texas — a notable accomplishment given the state's 140,000-strong officer force. His training included over 120 evaluations at Bexar County Jail, where he honed his skills in documenting cases of suspected impairment.

The role of a DRE is critical in law enforcement's fight against impaired driving. Not only do these officers administer tests to determine the type of substance affecting a driver, but they also play a key part in the prosecutorial process. Officer Mayfield-Walter's newfound expertise will aid in the accurate identification of intoxicants other than alcohol, a service that the department noted as "invaluable."

"His knowledge will be invaluable when our officers encounter someone they believe to be intoxicated on something other than alcohol," the department stated. "In cases of driving while intoxicated, his testimony and expertise will be crucial in the successful prosecution." The Coppell Police Department, filled with pride, also recognized the officer's hard work and dedication to public safety. "Congratulations Officer Mayfield-Walter. We are tremendously proud of you and lucky to have you on team CPD!" the post concluded.
