The manhunt that had Karnes County residents locking their doors ended abruptly this morning with the capture of an escaped inmate. Karnes County officials announced that Yonathan Eluid Castaneda-Flores, who escaped an immigration processing center Thursday evening, was back in custody after being nabbed near a local convenience store.

Emerging from the surrounding brush, Castaneda-Flores was spotted near a Stripes Convenience Store, which is located along U.S. Highway 181, at approximately 9:13 a.m. on Friday. Caught while trying to negotiate transport out of the region, he was quickly subdued by law enforcement after having eluded capture since about 7:45 p.m. the previous night. Officials say he received medical treatment before being turned over to the immigration center, as per KENS5.

The escape prompted an intense investigation that included deputies canvasing the area and following up on numerous tips provided by the local community. According to the local news outlet, he was last seen wearing a dark blue prison-issued uniform as he hopped the fence and took off toward FM 99. Residents were urged to remain vigilant and warned not to engage with the fugitive, but instead to contact authorities should they spot him.

Castaneda-Flores, a national of Honduras, had a warrant out for his arrest following his daring escape. With short dark hair and dark clothing, he blended into the night, making the search more complex. A sigh of relief was audibly drawn, then, when the announcement was made that the escapee had been found. Authorities have yet to comment on any potential changes to security measures at the facility in the wake of this incident.
