Moorpark High Student Charged with Falsely Reporting Explosives on CampusSource: Google Street View

A Moorpark High School student has been busted for crying wolf — calling in fake emergencies to his own school. Authorities said the teen was nabbed after law enforcement traced two phony reports of explosives on campus back to him.

The 15-year-old, whose name hasn't been released due to his age, deliberately tried to deceive officials by using WeTip, an anonymous tip system utilized by students and staff to report potential dangers at school. The false claims, made on May 17, stated that someone had fireworks or explosives at Moorpark High, according to the Moorpark Police Department. Following a thorough investigation, which included a swell of police activity at the school, the threat was deemed baseless.

Authorities dug deeper, and by May 20, the pieces began to fall into place. They discovered additional evidence that led them to the teen, linking him directly to the bogus reports. The student was arrested and subsequently charged with falsely reporting an emergency — a violation of PC 148.3, confirmed a police report. He has since been booked at the Ventura County Juvenile Justice Center in Oxnard.

"The Moorpark Police Department maintains a close working relationship with the Moorpark Unified School District," a statement by Deputy Occhipinti, underscoring the community's commitment to safety. The department also continues to encourage the use of WeTip for reporting legitimate concerns, ensuring the tool isn't undermined by those who opt to misuse it wrongfully.

The incident serves as a costly reminder of the resources and panic fake reports can trigger. Such pranks not only needlessly tie up emergency services but can also stoke unwarranted fear among students and parents. Moorpark authorities are keen to maintain an environment where the safety of pupils and staff is paramount, and such actions are met with stern consequences.

Ventura County Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest and criminal complaint against individuals responsible for serious crimes. They keep their callers anonymous and ensure the call isn't recorded. Tips can be submitted by calling 800-222-TIPS (8477).
