Texas Shoppers to Enjoy Tax-Free Weekend on Energy-Efficient Products This Memorial DaySource: City of Arlington, Texas

Texans have the opportunity to pocket some savings while going green this Memorial Day weekend. According to an announcement by the Comptroller, a Sales Tax Holiday will kick off on Saturday, May 25, stretching through Monday, May 27. This period encourages consumers to invest in certain ENERGY STAR® energy-efficient and water-conserving products without having to bear the burden of sales tax.

For those looking to cool down their homes without heating their expenses, tax-free purchases include air conditioners priced at $6,000 or less, as well as ENERGY STAR®-labeled ceiling fans, refrigerators selling for $2,000 or less, and several other energy-saving appliances. But walking into the store, not all ENERGY STAR® items are eligible; water heaters and clothes dryers are among the products that consumers will still need to pay taxes on.

As reported by the City of Arlington, Texas, the initiative also promotes water conservation through tax exemptions on a myriad of products. Items that carry a WaterSense® label or logo can be bought without taxes, irrespective of whether they are for personal or business use.

In parallel, the tax holiday is targeted at encouraging thriving landscapes while reducing expenditure. Eligible water-conserving products that help in "conserving or retaining groundwater, recharging water tables; or decreasing ambient air temperature, and so limiting water evaporation," like soaker hoses and moisture controls for irrigation systems, will also be tax-free, as long as they are destined for residential use. Some products, such as certain air conditioners and ceiling fans, can enjoy the tax holiday when bought for the sake of energy efficiency, but not for their water-saving attributes.

This fiscal respite offers Texans an incentive to embrace eco-friendly products. It not only supports individual financial health but also contributes to a larger environmental consciousness – a cause that's becoming increasingly critical in the face of pressing climatic challenges. As Memorial Day weekend approaches, Texas residents can plan their purchases accordingly, ready to capitalize on these savings and contribute to a more sustainable future.
