VIDEO: Alameda County Rolls Out New Livestock Evacuation Facility Amid Wildfire Preparedness Efforts in DublinSource: Alameda County Sheriff's Office

Residents and four-legged friends in Alameda County have a reason to feel a tad more secure, as local officials have unveiled a new livestock housing area at the East County Animal Shelter in Dublin. The facility aims to provide a sanctuary for large animals in emergencies, a concern not lost on Californians familiar with wildfire-induced evacuations. Last Friday, Sheriff Yesenia Sanchez, alongside Jennifer Wills, the Animal Services Supervisor, did the honors of cutting the ceremonial ribbon, signaling the operational launch of this crucial facility.

The shelter expansion is a response to a glaring need – to potentially save the lives of horses, goats, pigs, and other large animals when disaster strikes. Authorities often scramble to efficiently evacuate these large creatures, a logistical and emotional nightmare for everyone involved. With the new corrals, the East County Animal Shelter is poised to mitigate that chaos significantly. "This livestock expansion is essential because it allows us to shelter horses, goats, pigs, and more", said an official at the ribbon-cutting event, reaffirming their preparedness to step in when the next wildfire hits.

Notably, this project is the fruit of collaboration between the shelter staff, Alameda County Sheriff's Mounted Posse members, and the Office of Emergency Services personnel – a trinity of local agencies dedicated to emergency preparedness and animal safety.
