The 12-acre project signifies a substantial stride in the region's fight against homelessness and housing insecurity.

Securing shelter for those on the margins of society is a keystone in Governor Gavin Newsom's efforts to stem the tide of homelessness, which resonates with the objectives in the voter-backed Proposition 1. Here, the North Housing development finds its cornerstone, providing not merely roofs over heads but also essential support services. According to the California Department of Housing and Community Development, residents can access supportive services ranging from benefits counseling to adult education.

The affordability and support woven into the fabric of North Housing are buoyed by more than $20 million in funding from various state sources, including the Infill Infrastructure Grant and the Veterans Housing and Homelessness Prevention Programs. "New affordable housing and supportive services have never been more desperately needed," Tomiquia Moss, secretary of the California Business, Consumer Services, and Housing Agency, emphasized the acute demand for such projects, per the HCD's recent announcement.

The North Housing Master Plan, a project by the Housing Authority of the City of Alameda, is situated on land formerly owned by the U.S. Department of the Navy. This land was designated for the project under the Surplus Land Act and the Base Closure Act.
