Atlanta's hip-hop scene recognized one of its own this weekend when Killer Mike was honored with the first-ever "Game Changer Award." The accolade, presented posthumously in honor of Rico Wade of Dungeon Family fame, acknowledges individuals who've made significant contributions to the genre within the city. Killer Mike, a figure known for his Grammy-winning craft and civic engagement, was the fitting first recipient of such an award, as reported by Black America Web.

The ceremony took place during HOT 107.9's Birthday Bash concert, where Killer Mike took the stage before being surprised with the honor. The award was presented to him by Rico Wade’s mother, Beatrice Wade, and his sons Rico Jr. and Ryder, in addition to the surviving members of Organized Noize Productions, Ray Murray and Sleepy Brown. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Killer Mike received the award after his performance.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens has also been proactive in preserving Rico Wade's legacy. During Wade's funeral service in April, Dickens announced the launch of the Rico Wade Music Executive Training Program, aimed at nurturing new talent within the music industry. Rico Wade, who passed in April at the age of 52, was credited with helping shape the careers of acts such as OutKast, Goodie Mob, and Cee-Lo Green.

In his speech to the audience, Killer Mike underscored Atlanta's status as a bastion of opportunity and community for Black artists. "I just wanna tell Atlanta this: y'all ain’t gotta wish to be nobody else. Who y’all are is the absolute shit," Killer Mike said, as reported by Black America Web. His words not only resonated with present Atlantans but also echoed across the larger hip-hop community, serving as a testament to the city's enduring influence and his own commitment to it.
