An incident unfolded on Highway 24 early Wednesday morning when EBRPD Police Officers stopped what they suspected to be an intoxicated driver. According to the East Bay Regional Park District Police Department, the stop occurred around 2:30 a.m. near the St. Stephens off-ramp, sandwiched between the Briones and Lafayette Reservoir.

The driver, who is a convicted felon, was not only found to be under the influence but was also in possession of an unregistered, loaded Kimber 9mm handgun. Heading west on the freeway, the EBRPD officers apprehended the driver, known for their mandate to patrol the park areas and surrounding vicinities.

In the Facebook post detailing the encounter, the East Bay Regional Park District Police Department reminded the public of their roles and duties, stating, "EBRPD officers are not only dedicated to keeping our parks safe, but also the surrounding areas that border our parks." This incident highlights the wider jurisdiction park police can hold, emphasizing that any officer has the authority to conduct a traffic stop, a fact not always known by everyday citizens.

The driver now faces charges of DUI in addition to multiple felony firearm charges. The East Bay Regional Park District Police Department used the event as a teachable moment, with a note to the public: "Please be safe and drive responsibly."
