Attention all parents with kids on the brink of 4th or 5th grade: It's that time of year again. The City of Coon Rapids has announced its annual Safety Camp, slated for a summer kickoff on July 16 and 17, giving youngsters a chance to learn vital safety skills in a fun, and engaging environment. Taking place at the Coon Rapids Ice Center, located at 11000 Crooked Lake Boulevard, the camp is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

The camp, spearheaded by the Coon Rapids Fire and Police Departments, is more than just another summer activity; it's an educational experience wrapped in the guise of play, teaching kids essentials ranging from fire and electrical safety to internet smartness. In a release from the City's official website, campers are also encouraged to bring their bikes for hands-on learning and have the chance, to practice their strokes and kicks at a local pool to reinforce water safety.

This isn't just a hit-and-run affair. At the culmination of these two days, a short graduation and awards ceremony will honor the participating children. Parents and families can attend the ceremony, set for Wednesday, July 17 at 4 p.m. on the west side of the Coon Rapids Ice Center, to applaud their kids' newfound savvy in staying safe. To snag a spot for your kid, registration is a must, and it runs through July 8 at 4:30 p.m.

The camp doesn't just aim to imbue local youth with safety awareness; it's also designed with community support in mind. Thanks to the backing of the Coon Rapids Crime Prevention Association and the Coon Rapids Youth Hockey Association, the camp can offer a robust program to its participants. At a cost of $40, campers are provided with snacks, lunch, and a full schedule of enriching safety-related activities, but expenses, need not be a barrier – tuition assistance is available upon request.
