In a concerted effort to beautify the city's natural spaces and support its most vulnerable residents, multiple City of Dallas departments have come together to target litter removal in open spaces and waterways. Among those involved are Dallas Water Utilities (DWU), Code Compliance, Park and Recreation, the Office of Homeless Solutions, the City Marshals Office, and the Dallas Police Department. A cooperative initiative has been launched to not only clear trash from creeks and channels but also to manage large-scale cleanups on public and private lands that fall beyond the scope of regular maintenance, as reported by the City of Dallas.

This interdepartmental collaboration also aims to quickly provide aid to homeless people impacted by these efforts. The complexity of the challenge is significant, as it involves affecting a variety of stakeholders and, further, to effectively deploy resources in areas most in need of attention. The departments are working to ensure the cleanliness of the city's natural environments while also considering the needs of its homeless population.

Meanwhile, the focus on Dallas's waterways does not end with litter removal. Dallas Water Utilities is closely monitoring water quality, especially following sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) incidents which can have detrimental impacts on local creeks and water systems, disrupting the habitats that rely on them. According to the City of Dallas, the most frequent cause for concern with SSOs is blockage or other disruptions in the city's sewage infrastructure, prompting DWU to prioritize monitoring and testing of affected water sources post-overflow.

As the steward of public health and the environment, DWU remains attentive and ready to respond to report any sort of overflow situation—to respectively, mitigate potential hazards to the city's aquatic ecosystems. The emphasis lies clearly on the proactive maintenance of the water systems to prevent future occurrences while ensuring the well-being of Dallas's ecosystem and that of its human inhabitants.
