The recent sting operation by the Denton County Sheriff's Office has led to the arrest of Highland Village Fire Chief Jason Collier among 14 individuals for allegedly trying to buy sexual favors with money. FOX 4 News reported that the sting took place on Thursday, June 13, in Lewisville, leading to charges against Collier, including solicitation of prostitution and resisting arrest.
Following his arrest, the former fire chief, having served since 2008 and just promoted to chief in 2022, submitted his resignation effective June 15. According to city personnel policies, the City of Highland Village has since placed Collier on paid administrative leave. While they began investigating the matter, they have not publicly commented on the sting or the charges.
Designed to combat local prostitution, the operation uncovered other leads related to sex trafficking, which according to a press release from the Denton County Sheriff's Office quoted by The Dallas Express, are currently being followed up by their Human Trafficking Unit. The press release states, "The operation was designed to suppress prostitution in our community by arresting offenders attempting purchase of sexual favors for money."
Statistics suggest a persistent issue, with Dallas recording 202 offenses related to prostitution and 39 incidents of human trafficking as of June 14, with District 6 leading in prostitution-related offenses. The Dallas Police Department, noted by The Dallas Express, currently fields around 3,000 officers despite a recommended force of 4,000 from a prior City analysis. The City has allocated a budget of $654 million this fiscal year, less than what is seen in other high-crime jurisdictions to address public safety concerns.
City leaders, are aware of the underfunded and understaffed department, yet are grappling with devising a strategy that effectively curbs the rising instances of prostitution and human trafficking. They remain adamant in their efforts to address the public safety challenge that continues to loom large over Dallas communities.
