Flagstaff's I-17 to Close Overnight for Bridge Construction, ADOT Advises Detour via J.W. Powell BoulevardSource: Arriva436, CC BY 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Heads up, Flagstaff travelers: Interstate 17 will see an overnight closure that could add some minutes to your drive. On Monday, July 1, both directions of I-17 will be shut down at J.W. Powell Boulevard for bridge construction from 7 p.m. through to 5 a.m. the following Tuesday, as reported by ADOT. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is directing traffic to use the off- and on-ramps to detour around the closure, as covered in their latest alert.

While the construction crews make headway on the new bridge to ferry traffic over I-17, drivers are being told to tack on some extra travel time. ADOT aims to minimize disruption near Pulliam Airport and Fort Tuthill Park, but workouts in patience may indeed be a part of your evening commute, with slowdowns and merges in the work zones. Vehicle restrictions will be enforced—a 10-foot width limit during the overnight hours—so plan if you're guiding anything larger than a breadbox through this stretch of highway.

The expansion is part of ADOT's $8.2 million blueprint aimed at improving J.W. Powell Boulevard's bridge works, set to be completed by fall 2024. The current bridge will be retired and traffic rerouted to its successor later in the year, as per ADOT
