An inmate's death at Chatham County Jail is currently under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), following a request for assistance from the Chatham County Sheriff's Office. The GBI's involvement began after the inmate was found unresponsive on the evening of June 25, according to official statements released by the bureau.

The deceased, whose name has not yet been released pending family notification, was booked into the county jail earlier that day after being arrested by the Savannah Police Department. Following protocol, medical staff at the facility evaluated him upon arrival and subsequently referred him to the hospital for what they deemed necessary medical clearance. After being discharged from the hospital, the man, was returned to his cell where he was later discovered unresponsive, according to details provided by the GBI.

Attempts to revive the inmate failed and he was pronounced dead upon his return to the hospital. The GBI has announced that the inmate's body has been sent to its Medical Examiner’s Office in Pooler, Georgia for examination to determine the cause of death.
