Jai Ferrell Breaks Barriers as First Woman of Color CEO of Girl Scouts of Greater AtlantaSource: Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta

The Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta have ushered in a historic change by naming Jai Ferrell as its first woman of color to act as Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant milestone for the century-old institution; Ferrell, whose tenure commences on July 1, is an Atlanta native and an alumna of Spelman College, her journey with the Girl Scouts having rooted at a troop based out of Lindsey Street Baptist Church—a troop under the leadership of her mother and godmother.

Ferrell shared reflections on her appointment and its significance during an interview at her alma mater, as reported by WABE, expressing an enduring attachment to both Spelman and the Scouts: "Coming to Spelman was one of our big times, to ride by, come to the school and see, so it’s hallowed ground here," and adding, "I'm a proud alumna, but I literally think my fiber of who I am is at this place, so whether it be Girl Scouts, whether it’s Spelman, the idea of girlhood and sisterhood is truly something I hold dear to me."

Her vision for the organization includes pushing past its renowned cookie sales program to encompass a broad array of activities that cut across fields of robotics and entrepreneurship all while cherishing their staple initiatives; this is in a bid to enrich the experiences of the roughly 30,000 members and volunteers that form the local chapter's community.

Eager to propel the organization into new realms, Ferrell underscored her commitment to innovation and girl empowerment, telling WABE, that "she hopes to take the organization “beyond the cookie” with opportunities in a diverse range of activities including, robotics, entrepreneurship and other interests geared towards the future."
