Man Dies in Canoe Mishap on Nehalem River Near Miami-Foley Bridge in Tillamook CountySource: Tillamook County Sheriff

A tragic canoe accident on Oregon's Nehalem River claimed the life of a 49-year-old man last week. The incident occurred downstream from the Miami-Foley bridge in Tillamook County when the canoe he was in with a woman capsized after hitting an unknown object in the water, as reported by KOIN.

According to the Tillamook County sheriff's deputies, the man was discovered face-down in the river after the woman swam to shore and looked back to check on him, at this time unable to save him despite her returning to pull him to the riverside, her efforts to save his life were met with the inescapable sturdiness of death, a Tillamook County Sheriff's Office marine deputy stated, as per KPTV. Nearby residents, aroused by the woman's calls for assistance, notified emergency services and attempted CPR until the arrival of trained professionals, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man's identity remains undisclosed as authorities perform the necessary notifications to kin. In light of the incident, Deputy Dennis Greiner of the Tillamook County Sheriff's Office underscored the critical importance of having personal floatation devices (PFDs) not only accessible but worn and properly fastened. He emphasized, "Even though you might be a lifelong boater or expert swimmer, one never knows what might happen when you hit the water during a boating incident", as reported by KPTV.
