A fatal accident involving a bicyclist occurred this past Wednesday evening in the Steele Creek Division. The tragic event took place shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Steele Creek Road. Police arrived at the scene to find Mihael Stegne, 58, unresponsive in the roadway following a collision with a vehicle. Despite the efforts of the Charlotte Fire Department and Medic, Stegne was pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

According to official communications from the CMPD, Jeffrey Jordan, the 38-year-old driver involved in the incident, cooperated with authorities, remaining on the scene to converse with officers. The initial findings by the CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit, along with the DWI Task Force, Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Search, indicated that Stegne was crossing the road outside of the pedestrian crosswalk and was not wearing a helmet when he was struck.

Contrary to many traffic incidents where speed or intoxication are factors, reports suggest that neither was likely the cause in this case. Traveling in the southbound lanes with the traffic flow, the vehicle's involvement with the cyclist appears to be a stark case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Investigators have yet to release a toxicology report for Mr. Stegne, leaving a significant question as to whether any impairments on his part might have contributed to the fatal turn of events.
