Memphis Animal Services (MAS) is currently conducting an inquiry into the unfortunate demise of a canine within their care, after the dog was discovered unresponsive in the shelter's play yard on June 24. Preliminary evaluations point to the heat as a likely factor contributing to the tragedy, although an official cause of death is yet to be determined, as Local Memphis first reported.

According to WREG, the late dog, known affectionately as Lulu, had been allowed access to the outdoor play area, which now has seen modifications including the addition of more shade to prevent similar incidents and MAS has reiterated their commitment towards ensuring that all staff are well-versed in the care and safety of the animals in their charge, taking all possible measures in response to the dog’s death and MAS communicated its dedication to animal welfare, also saying “We are committed to the distillation of more data and findings as they become available.”

The response from MAS has been steadfast as they have communicated their intent to provide updates through their ongoing internal investigation. Following the event, MAS stated, “We are committed to the safety of all animals in our care and will share more information as it becomes available,” in a post shared on their official Facebook page
