The National Weather Service in Memphis has updated its weather forecast for the coming days, indicating a surge in temperature and the probability of thunderstorms as we head towards the weekend. According to the NWS, the city woke up to a mostly cloudy morning with a relatively high humidity level of 79% and a temperature of 77°F, which is set to climb throughout the day.

Residents can expect a surge in the heat this weekend, with today’s forecast promising mostly sunny skies, and temperatures peaking at 92°F. The real feel due to the heat index could rise into the triple digits, getting as hot as 102. The wind is expected to remain light and become southwesterly at about 5 mph in the afternoon. A notably high heat index is not the only concern, with lows tonight hovering around a warm 78°F, those without adequate cooling systems may find some discomfort.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, the NWS anticipates even higher temperatures, reaching near a sweltering 96°F. The accompanying heat index could soar to a stifling 108. The weather service advises citizens to prepare for a predominantly sunny day, with a southwest wind picking up to 10 mph. By tomorrow night, the chances of showers and thunderstorms stand at 30 percent, providing a potential, albeit minor, reprieve from the heat.

The pattern of heat and potential thunderstorms is slated to continue with Sunday showing a 50 percent chance of rain, though temperatures will remain high, at 91°F. Transitioning into early next week, conditions appear to settle with sunny days and clearer nights. Monday’s forecast promises sunshine, a high near 89°F, and quieter winds from the northeast. As we approach the 4th of July, apart from a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms, it's set to be mostly sunny with highs lingering around the mid-90s.

Memphis residents planning outdoor activities, especially those involving prolonged exposure to the sun, should take necessary precautions. Staying hydrated, applying sunscreen, and wearing suitable clothing can mitigate the risk of heat-related illnesses during this period of elevated temperatures. It is also important to be wary of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, both of which are serious health concerns during such weather conditions.
