Oxnard Police Release Video Briefing on Officer-Involved Shooting of Suspect With Scissors and Outstanding WarrantSource: Oxnard Police Department

A Critical Incident Community Briefing video detailing an officer-involved shooting that took place late last month. According to the Oxnard Police Department, the incident occurred on the night of May 26 when officers encountered 27-year-old Isaiah Nichols, who was walking in traffic on Ventura Road and reportedly holding scissors.

Officers were responding to calls about Nichols's erratic behavior when they recognized him as the subject of an outstanding felony arrest warrant for attempted murder stemming from a May 17 stabbing incident. The briefing video, which has been made publicly available on the Oxnard Police Department’s various social media platforms, shows the police's encounter with Nichols. During the incident, Nichols failed to comply with the officer's commands to drop the weapon and advanced toward them while raising the scissors, prompting the officer-involved shooting.

Despite being wounded by gunfire, Nichols remained a threat as he would not release his grip on the scissors, according to the briefing video. Sergeant Enrique Alvarez and Officer Mason Galindo discharged their Tasers in an attempt to subdue him, with the latter's attempt finally causing Nichols to drop the weapon, as per the Oxnard Police Department. The officers then secured the scissors and provided medical aid to Nichols, who is now undergoing treatment at a local medical facility.

In the aftermath of the shooting and before Nichols' expected criminal charges, the Oxnard Police has emphasized transparent communication with the community. "As part of our commitment to transparency with our community, we believe it is important to share this video with the community we serve," Chief Jason Benites stated in the news release. "This Critical Incident Community Briefing video provides a summary account of what occurred during the evening of May 26, including the sequence of events leading to the officer-involved shooting."
