San Rafael residents are grappling with the aftermath of a startling act of domestic violence that took place in the early hours yesterday. According to the San Rafael Police Department, Walenton Deleon-Diaz, a 26-year-old local, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide following an incident where he allegedly stabbed his mother multiple times. The department's report details that Deleon-Diaz is now facing multiple felony charges, which include attempted homicide, after officers responded to a distressing 9-1-1 call before 1:00 AM.

Upon arrival at the scene in an apartment located on the unit block of Fairfax Street, officers encountered Deleon-Diaz on the street, being defiant and noncompliant with verbal commands. He had purportedly been armed with the knife used in the assault. The tense situation compelled the responding officers to employ de-escalation strategies; however, as the suspect reached for his waistband, police resorted to using a non-lethal sponge round to subdue him effectively.
Meanwhile, the victim received critical first aid before being rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, though she is now listed in stable condition. The police relayed that the violent altercation stemmed from a verbal argument that had spiraled out of control. Others in the family home were the ones who had the presence of mind to call for help during the horrific attack.
After receiving medical clearance, Deleon-Diaz was booked into the Marin County Jail with the requested bail set at $750,000 due to the gravity of his alleged actions. Officials levied charges against him that included attempted homicide, mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon—not a firearm—and criminal threats.
