Teen Charged in Connection with the Murder of Oakland County Sheriff's Deputy During Detroit InvestigationSource: Oakland County Sheriff's Office

An 18-year-old has been charged in connection with the murder of an Oakland County Sheriff's Deputy, as reported by CBS News Detroit. The deputy, identified as Bradley Reckling, was fatally shot Saturday night during a stolen vehicle investigation on Detroit's east side.

Karim Blake Moore, the teen, was arraigned Wednesday and faces charges of lying to police and resisting arrest, according to The Detroit News. A $100,000 cash bond was set, and if released, Moore was ordered to house arrest with a GPS tether. Reckling, a nine-year veteran of the department, leaves behind a wife and three kids, with a fourth on the way. His funeral service will be held at the Apostolic Church of Auburn Hills.

During Moore's arraignment, Assistant Prosecutor Matthew Penney claimed that Moore fled the vehicle involved in Reckling's murder and lied to investigators thereafter, "feared for his safety in the community," as recounted by CBS News Detroit. Moore's defense attorney, Adam Clements, argued that despite the charges being linked to the deputy's death, the teen is "presumed to be absolutely innocent."

The slain deputy was pursuing a stolen 2022 Chevrolet Equinox, which had been taken earlier from the Red Oaks Waterpark in Madison Heights. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office has provided scant details about the incident, pending an official news conference. Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter mourned the loss on social media, urging the community to keep the deputy's family and colleagues in their hearts, "I am heartbroken to learn of the shooting death of an Oakland county Sheriff’s deputy," Coulter said in a post quoted by Hoodline.
