The City of Woodstock's latest civil project has made headlines, and not just for its structural ingenuity, but for its recognition by a prestigious engineering society. In a ceremony held this past Friday, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) named Woodstock's Hub Transformation Project as a 2024 Project of Excellence. This accolade was celebrated by key players including Jamie Palmer, Assistant to the City Manager; Janis Steinbrenner, Engineering Manager; and representatives from Cherokee County and Arcadis at the ASCE Georgia Section Annual Awards Gala on June 21, as reported on the city’s official website.
The project in question has made significant upgrades to the traffic flow in Downtown Woodstock. It transformed Mill Street into a two-way thoroughfare, introduced a roundabout at the intersection of Mill Street and Towne Lake Parkway, and integrated an additional left turn lane at the juncture where drivers go from Towne Lake Parkway eastbound onto Main Street northbound. These modifications have provided a bypass to avert the historically jam-packed Main Street at Towne Lake Parkway intersection, resulting in decreased delays and a reduction in crash frequency.
Notably, this transformative work did not rely solely on local funding. It was supported with financial assistance via a loan and a grant from the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank, an agency administered by the State Road and Tollway Authority. Such investment is a nod to the importance of improving infrastructural efficiency and safety in growing urban centers like Woodstock.
