GBI Investigates After Savannah Police Shoot Suspect Involved in Car Chase Near Home DepotSource: Facebook/Georgia Bureau of Investigation

An investigation is underway following an officer-involved shooting in Savannah, Chatham County, last night. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in at the behest of the Savannah Police Department to look into the circumstances where 31-year-old Gregory Eugene Griffin was shot near a Home Depot on E. Victory Drive, according to an official statement by the GBI.

The incident, which resulted in no injuries to officers, occurred when police attempted to pull over Griffin's vehicle, acting on intelligence provided by the Chatham County Police Department implicating Griffin in a separate homicide case. Griffin evaded the police and a subsequent chase ended in a car accident. He then fled on foot, and during the pursuit, he drew a firearm and fired shots at the police. This prompted the officers to discharge their weapons, striking Griffin.

Griffin was subsequently provided medical aid by the officers present and taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center. His condition has not been disclosed. Officials are urging anyone with information related to this case to reach out to the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Statesboro, offering a phone number, an online tip submission, and a mobile app option for anonymous tips.

The GBI's investigation into the shooting is considered standard procedure for incidents involving police gunfire and it will remain active until they complete their independent review, after which the Eastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office will take over for case assessment and potential prosecution.
