Teen Fatally Shot in Suspected Accidental Shooting at Houston Apartment ComplexSource: Google Street View

A tragic scene unfolded yesterday morning at the St. James Apartment complex in southwest Houston where a teenage boy was killed in what police suspect was an accidental shooting. According to ABC13, a group of three teens were alone in an apartment around 2:30 a.m. when a firearm they were allegedly handling discharged, hitting one of the boys in the stomach.

The Houston Police Department responded to the incident, where they found the victim, believed to be 14 or 15 years old, dead at the scene. HPD Lt. T. Riley described the aftermath to reporters, detailing that one of the teens—who lived at the apartment and was allegedly in possession of the gun—fled the location with the weapon while another stayed to summon the police. "The owner of that firearm or the resident at this location, a juvenile male, fled from the location with a firearm. The witness stayed behind and called the police," Lt. Riley told ABC13.

In short order, the suspect was located and taken into custody. Cameras from ABC13 captured the moment when Houston Police officers handcuffed the teenager and placed him in a patrol car. The Houston Chronicle reported that an investigation is currently underway, with details being gathered by HPD's homicide team.

The relationship between the three teenagers and how the firearm came into their possession is still unclear, with HPD working to ascertain if charges are going to be filed. The names of the involved parties have not been released pending notification of next of kin and further investigation.
