On October 4, 41-year-old San Rafael resident, Kenry Rodas-Reyes, was sentenced to 29 days in jail for an auto fraud case. Rodas-Reyes had falsely claimed his vehicle was stolen, while it was found that he was selling the car's parts online, as reported by the Marin County District Attorney's Office.

Judge Beth S. Jordan sentenced him after he pleaded guilty to fraudulently presenting an insurance claim on August 8. Along with imprisonment, he's been put on formal probation for two years and obligated to pay restitution, fines, and penalties.

Fraud Investigators from the Marin County District Attorney's Office linked Rodas-Reyes to both the registered vehicle owner and online parts seller. This connection was initially sparked by an unsuspecting buyer who had purchased those auto parts.

Rodas-Reyes not only falsely claimed insurance, but also received a compensation of $4,807.21.

Deputy District Attorneys Sean Kensinger and Wesley Pratt stressed the importance of curbing auto insurance fraud and taking strict actions against offenders. They highlighted the impact of insurance fraud on the Marin residents by raising their insurance premiums.

Insurance fraud, considered a felony, can attract as much as 5 years in prison and $50,000 in fines. It's imperative to immediately report any suspect of insurance fraud to authorities like the Marin County District Attorney's Office or the California Department of Insurance Fraud hotline at 1-800-927-4357
