Flames engulfed a Novato home on Alameda De La Loma this past weekend, leading to the arrest of a suspected arsonist, authorities said. The Novato Fire Protection District and Novato Police Department were on the scene just after the fire was reported at about 4:30 PM on March 24, with the quick response averting any injuries.

A woman, matching the description provided by an eyewitness was apprehended near the scene. She was later identified by police as 41-year-old Amy Lewis. According to a statement obtained by the Novato Police, Lewis was questioned about the incident, where it was discovered that she had reportedly set something ablaze at the home's upper porch entrance, leading to extensive damage.

The homeowners, who did not recognize Lewis, were not present during the conflagration. The timely intervention by the Novato Fire Protection District personnel managed to contain the fire before it could spread further. Novato Police have since taken Lewis into custody on felony arson charges, amplified by the cooperative efforts between law enforcement and fire departments.

Investigators and a Fire Mitigation Ranger worked alongside Novato Police Crime Scene Investigations staff, and Detectives to collect evidence and process the scene. The effective teamwork, and communication with the Novato Fire Protection District, was instrumental in Lewis's arrest. Local community members also played a pivotal role, "We are extremely grateful for our community members who provided accurate and timely information, ultimately leading to the arrest," said the department in their official communication.

With fire season on the horizon, Novato Police urge the public to remain vigilant of any fire dangers and report suspicious activities promptly by calling their dispatch numbers or 9-1-1 in case of an emergency. "We can help reduce crime in our community together," they emphasized, underscoring the power of community vigilance and support in curbing such destructive incidents.
