Madrone Owner Buys Pop's Bar In The MissionFlickr/Arlen
Here's a taste of a little news from beyond our borders.

Our friends down in the Mission tell us there's been a mighty hand-wringing lately over the fate of Pop's. It was discovered recently that the bar at 24th and York was being sold, according to Uptown Almanac, though the buyer was a mystery. As it turns out, the buyer is Michael "Spike" Krouse, the owner of Madrone. We spotted a liquor license transfer application for the bar attributed to Krouse, who confirmed the news to us last night:
"Yes I am in the process of buying Pops. My plans are to keep it as Pops. Pops has been around for 67 years and hopefully I can help get it to 100. It will go through changes, but they will be changes that pay respect to the history of the bar, the neighborhood and San Francisco in general."
Krouse tells us the transfer will take about 90 days, after which he'll shut down the bar temporarily for a remodel. But he says that "the integrity of the space will not be altered... [we'll] do the very best we can to make the space feel inviting and welcoming for all." The drink program will evolve as well, but will "be accessible and unpretentious. We will have cheap domestic beer and more pricey craft and Belgian beer as well as great mixed drinks. A little something for everybody." So, if you were concerned about the future of Pop's, rest assured: the bar is in good hands.
