Thanks to a tip from Beyond Chron, we learned yesterday that SFPD Captain Cherniss of Tenderloin Station will be stepping down, and Captain Teresa Gracie will be taking his place. The move follows a recent leadership shuffle which saw Captain Raj Vaswani move from Park Station to Bayview and Captain John Sanford taking his place in April.
Cherniss, who has led the Tenderloin Police Station for two years, has been on a leave of absence since April following a shoulder surgery. He will now be taking over the Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI), which among other things allots grants to projects that "prevent, protect against, respond to, and recover from terrorist incidents or related catastrophic events."
Captain Gracie told us in an email that she's been a captain for a year, and that her first assignment under that title was heading up the Special Victims Unit of the Investigation Bureau. For the past six months, she's been working in the Tactical Company.
"I'm very excited to be at Tenderloin and I look forward to working with everyone," she told us. There's no word yet on what Captain Gracie might have planned for the Tenderloin beat, but we'll share details on any new initiatives when we learn more.
