On Friday, tipster Dex C. alerted us to sidewalk advertisements around the Castro/Duboce Triangle area promoting the Summer of Love exhibit at the de Young museum. While the stencils are made of washable chalk, they're still against the law.
We reached out to the de Young on Friday, and director of public relations Miriam Newcomer responded quickly to offer an apology to city residents and declare that the museum would remove the stencils "immediately."
“Unfortunately, members of our marketing team—that drove initiatives promoting the Summer of Love exhibition at the de Young—were unaware of the restrictions surrounding our city’s sidewalks," said Newcomer. "The Museums will ensure this oversight does not occur again.”
This isn't the first time that the neighborhood has been tagged with promotional graffiti. In November 2016, advertisements for a Lady Gaga album were painted on Castro sidewalks, and in December 2015, Justin Bieber graffiti was spotted in several neighborhoods.
