SF Eats: Na Ya Dessert Cafe debuts in Hayes Valley, Indian grocery

In this edition, a new eatery sets its sights on a longtime SoMa space, a new Indian grocery debuts in the Mission and an Asian-influenced dessert spot expands to Hayes Valley.

A new restaurant, called Sun and Moon, appears to be headed to the old Koh Samui & The Monkey space at 415 Brannan St. (at Third Street).

According to a liquor license application, the space's new owners are Nutnicha Sirisoonthorn and Atthapon Inkhong. But further information on the pair is spare, and Lupe Martinez, who assisted in filing the application, did not respond to a request for comment.

The original outpost of Koh Samui & The Monkey, which operated in the neighborhood for almost 20 years, closed in April; a second location in the Mission (280 Valencia St.) closed back in 2013.

Indian Spices & Grocery (3265 22nd St.)

A new Indian grocery store, Indian Spices & Groceries, is opening its doors today at 3265 22nd St., between Mission and Valencia streets — the former home of Mission Picnic.

The new store comes from Surinder “Pal” Sroa — who formerly owned nearby Indian restaurant Lotus SF (2434 Mission St.) — and manager Dhruba “Dhru” Kunwar.

Earlier this year, Sroa sold Lotus SF to restaurateur Ajay Khadka in order to focus on the new grocery and his other ventures, including a second Lotus location in San Rafael. Khadka has since turned the restaurant into Mission Curry House, offering Indian and Nepalese cuisine.

According to a representative, Indian Spices & Groceries will sell a variety of Indian spices, bulk foods and prepared foods like chaats and samosas, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. It will also offer gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan items, and Indian beauty products such as henna.

Hayes Valley

Na Ya Dessert Cafe (535 Octavia St.)

According to tipster Natalie D., Na Ya Dessert Cafe is now open in Hayes Valley's former Loving Cup space. It's the second location for the Asian-style dessert spot, which originated in the Inner Richmond (5338 Geary Blvd.)

The menu at the new spot spans three major Asian dessert categories: toasts stuffed with ice cream and other sweet fillings; bingsu, or shaved ice; and dessert crepes.

Options include a chocolate toast with chocolate, bananas and vanilla ice cream, or a mango and sticky rice crepe with coconut ice cream. There's also a chocolate lava cake with Thai tea-flavored filling, and steamed bread with kaya (young coconut) dip.
